Healing Isn’t Found in Comfort, but in Courage

As Christians, we often long for comfort. We want peace without pain, rest without struggle, and healing without hardship. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that true transformation rarely comes from the cozy or familiar. Healing—spiritual, emotional, and even physical—is often found in courage: The courage to face our brokenness, the courage to confront sin, and the courage to trust God even when the path is uncertain. The Bible is full of examples where courage, not comfort, led to restoration.

Consider Joshua 1:9: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Here, God calls Joshua into a daunting mission, leading His people into the Promised Land. Comfort would have kept Joshua in familiar surroundings, but courage compelled him to step forward into uncertainty, and God’s presence went with him.

Similarly, when we confront our own struggles—grief, addiction, relational pain, or spiritual doubts—it can feel safer to stay in avoidance or denial. Yet, Scripture calls us to a different path. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us: "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

Healing requires us to embrace that spirit of power and love through the help of the Holy Spirit. This requires speaking truths we’d rather hide, forgiving when our hearts resist, and taking the steps toward reconciliation or repentance, even when it’s uncomfortable. Courage is the vessel God uses to bring His transformative healing.

Practical courage often looks like:

  • Admitting your need for God and others instead of pretending everything is okay.

  • Seeking counsel and support when struggles feel overwhelming.

  • Facing past wounds and allowing God’s Word to bring insight and restoration.

  • Choosing obedience over ease, even when it costs pride or comfort.

Remember, the path to healing may be hard, but God’s grace meets us on that path.

Psalm 34:18 offers encouragement:

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." The broken heart is not abandoned; it is embraced by the One who calls us to courageous healing. True growth comes not when we cling to comfort, but when we step into God’s power with brave hearts.

Let today be a reminder: Healing isn’t in staying safe—it’s in stepping forward with courage, trusting that God is with you every step of the way.
